Bring Art Outside
Gardens and outdoor spaces are often the last place people think to place sculpture — and the first place it truly comes into its own. Away from walls and furniture, a geometric steel sculpture can stand freely, interact with natural light, and become the defining feature of an outdoor space.
Here is how to place a TomSmitMetalWorks sculpture in your garden, terrace, or courtyard for maximum impact.
Choose the Right Location
Placement is everything outdoors. Consider these options:
- As a focal point at the end of a path or sight line — draw the eye through the garden to a single strong form.
- In a corner or against a hedge — the dark green of foliage contrasts beautifully with the warm rust patina.
- On a terrace or paved area — a sculpture on stone or concrete anchors the space and adds an architectural element.
- Freestanding in a lawn or gravel garden — surrounded by open space, the geometric form speaks for itself.
The Patina and the Outdoors
Our sculptures are sealed with a weather-resistant finish that protects the patina in outdoor conditions. Rain, wind, and changing temperatures will not damage the piece — and over time, outdoor placement adds further depth and character to the surface.
The warm amber and copper tones of the rust patina pair naturally with outdoor materials: stone, gravel, weathered wood, and the greens and browns of planting.
Scale Matters More Outside
Outdoors, scale shifts. A piece that looks large indoors can appear modest in an open garden. For outdoor placement, we generally recommend sculptures of 40 cm or taller — larger pieces make a stronger statement and hold their presence against sky, trees, and open space.
Light Changes Everything
One of the great pleasures of an outdoor sculpture is watching how it changes through the day. Morning light catches different planes than afternoon sun. On an overcast day, the patina deepens. At dusk, the warm tones glow.
If you have outdoor lighting, a single uplight or spotlight positioned at ground level beside the sculpture creates a dramatic effect after dark.
Less Is More
Resist the temptation to surround a sculpture with too many plants or objects. Give it space — a clear zone of gravel, stone, or lawn around the base. The empty space is part of the composition.
