The Art of Rust – How Natural Patina Makes Every Sculpture Unique

Why Rust Is Not a Flaw — It's the Finish

When most people think of rust, they think of decay. At TomSmitMetalWorks, we see something entirely different: a living surface that tells the story of steel meeting air, water, and time.

Every geometric steel sculpture we create develops its own natural rust patina — a warm, layered coating of amber, copper, and deep brown that no factory process can replicate. It is the fingerprint of the steel itself.

How the Patina Forms

After welding and grinding, each sculpture is left to oxidise. The oxidation process is carefully guided in our workshop to achieve a rich, even patina — then sealed at the perfect moment to preserve its character.

We do not rush this process. The result is locked in at exactly the right moment to capture the unique character of that specific piece. No two sculptures look exactly alike.

Geometric Form Meets Organic Surface

There is a deliberate tension in our work: the precision of geometric angles against the unpredictability of oxidation. Sharp edges. Clean planes. And on every surface, the organic, unrepeatable story of rust.

This contrast is what makes a TomSmitMetalWorks sculpture a piece of art rather than a product.

Indoor & Outdoor Placement

Our sculptures are designed for both indoor and outdoor settings. The sealed patina is weather-resistant and stable — equally at home on a concrete terrace as on a marble shelf. Over time, outdoor pieces develop an even deeper character as the environment continues to interact with the surface.

Handcrafted in the Netherlands

Every piece is made by hand in our workshop in the Netherlands. No mass production. No casting. Each sculpture is cut, welded, ground, and finished individually — which is why every piece you order is, in the truest sense, one of a kind.
